Introduction to Sulphur Dye

- ishaan November 5, 2020

Sulphur Dyes offer technical advantage in dyeing, display improved fastness properties and are available at moderate prices. Sulphur Dyes are mainly used for dyeing cotton, viscose, Linen and blended fabric of polyester-cotton, polyester-viscose etc. The Fabric should be Desized, Scoured in open width & washed thoroughly to obtain true shade. When dyeing light shades it is advisable to dye fabrics before mercerizing in order to provide best possible condition for level dyeing.

Application: (Dyeing Method)

Dissolution of dyestuffs: the sulphur dyes should be dissolved in a sodium sulphide solution
before they can be used for dyeing. The quantity of sodium sulphide required for each
sulphur dyestuff is specified in the annexed.
Generally the best method for dissolving of the dyestuff is to paste with required amount of
Turkey Red Oil (T.R.O.) and add requisite amount of sodium sulphide of 60% grade and hot
water. Boil for 1-12 minutes to ensure the complete dissolution of dyestuff. Filter the
dissolved (Leuco) color solution through muslin cloth & fine sieve.

To start dyeing, the dye bath is set at 50 0 C containing
1-2 g/l Wetting Agent
2 g/l Soda Ash
6-8 g/l Sodium Sulphide 60% quality
1:5 M: L: R

Enter the fabric in blank bath (above bath) and run for 10 minutes. Add pre dissolved color
solution in two parts and raise the temperature to 60 0 C to 65 0 C. Add common salt or Glauber
salt 10-15g/l in two parts and raise the temperature to boil and continue the dyeing for 50-60
minutes at the same temperature (generally 8 ends are given for jigger dyeing).
After dyeing the goods, fabrics are squeezed, rinsed & oxidized chemically with 1-3g/l
Potassium Bichromate & 1-3g/l Acetic Acid (glacial) at 70 0 C for 10 minutes. The fabric is
washed, soaped & washed thoroughly & finished as per requirement.

Note:
Dyeing vessels should be made of stainless steel.
Soft water should be used.
The above method is suggestive, please co-relate it with others.
These shades are processed in very controlled manner in lab.
Please do trials before going for bulk production, as the depth & tone may vary from
substrate to substrate.
